Data at NOCS

BODC Southampton

The NOC, as a centre of the Natural Environment Research Council, is guided by the NERC data policy and the requirements of various collaborative projects.

The NERC guidelines also apply to all NERC funded research across the broader NOCS partners.

The British Oceanographic Data Centre (BODC) is NERC's designated data centre for Marine Sciences. BODC is the primary repository for Oceanographic Data collected by researchers at the NOCS.

BODC should be the first place to contact when searching for data from NOCS.

BODC have a small group of staff based at NOCS, providing support for data management across the centre.

Other data activities at NOCS

In addition, NOCS is home to the British Ocean Sediment Core Research Facility (BOSCORF) and maintains part of the Discovery Collections, as well as ocean model data, some marine geophysics data and raw datasets.

NERC funded programmes are supported by appropriate hardware infrastructure to ensure that their data storage requirements are satisfied. NOCS has a 100 tera-byte achive server plus in excess of 5 tera-bytes of online storage.

NOCS is actively involved in 'NERC DataGrid', a project of the UK's 'E-Science' programme, involving atmospheric, oceanographic and geophysical sciences, with the aim of making its data more widely available to the scientific community.
